The Tangencya Project

Objectives:
  • To do a survey of the state of contemporary artistic production in Southern Africa and the South/South Diaspora.
  • To emphasize the need for intercultural dialogue that examines issues pertaining to the history of cultural power and disempowerment.
  • To promote areas where different creative disciplines can interact to ignite new forms of expression.
  • To establish new and affirm older networks of communication between creative disciplines within the SADC regions and other cultural institutions on the South/South vector.
  • To develop theoretical discourses within the South/South vector that discuss and research the philosophical issues around cultural identity and to distribute this information throughout the represented regions.
  • To ensure that this language is accessible in as wide a manner as possible.
  • To affirm local cultural experience and to develop the mechanisms for these experiences to be transformed into creativity.
  • To encourage cultural exchanges between countries on the Southern geographical vector and to seek points of commonality with those countries in the North that share similar cultural ;concerns.
  • To pursue the broadening of our definitions for creativity in order that we may engage more pro-actively with the social forces that impact upon cultural discourse in the post-colonial terrain.

    Tangencya 2 - 2006
As was the case with Tangencya 1, Tangencya 2 was a multi-media, inter-disciplinary, arts-based, public cultural project with site-specific events located throughout the eThekwini Metro precinct. It projects the city of Durban as a locus of diverse histories and cultural interventions, which contribute to its unique significance. It examines the immediacies of locality in the turbulence of a larger geographic, economic and political landscape. It questions the politics of touch in a world of shifting boundaries and emergent relationships.

Tangencya 2 had a large performative element and endeavoured to touch, reach out and make unknown voices heard. It investigated the implementation of creative practice and spoke to the processes and relevance of creative intervention.
